Load shedding describes the switching off of electrical load to portions of our electricity network(s), and hence the loss of supply to the customers in those areas. Load shedding is initiated by the national market operator, AEMO, who instructs the relevant distribution or transmission company to reduce electricity demand by quickly disconnecting consumers from their networks.
CitiPower and Powercor comply with all load shedding orders in accordance with our national energy market obligations.
These market orders often occur with little notice and sometimes in emergency situations. Where possible, we advise customers who will be affected by load shedding via emergency radio broadcast. During load shedding events our priorities are public safety, minimising economic impact and fairly sharing the burden across our distribution customers.
