Changes to Victoria's Competitive Energy Market

17 December 2008

Victoria's State Government has made changes to the regulation of the competitive energy market in Victoria. These changes affect electricity retailers, and do not pertain to distributors like CitiPower and Powercor Australia. Distributors manage the poles and wires that deliver electricity to homes and businesses, and electricity retailers sell electricity in the marketplace and manage customers' accounts.

Under these changes, energy retailers will set all electricity and gas prices and the Essential Services Commission (ESC), the independent regulator of Victoria's essential utility services, will monitor the prices and report on them publicly. These choices should help customers to get the best price or deal that suits their needs.

The changes will require every gas and electricity retail company to publish certain plans on their company websites from December 2008. The ESC will publish these offers from 1 January 2009.

For more information about these changes, visit the ESC website.
