Installation Process

During the meter exchange, your power supply is disconnected for approximately 30 to 60 minutes while our meter installation technician replaces your old manually read meter with a new smart meter.

When this is completed, an information pack is left on site that explains how to read your smart meter and also describes its benefits.

All Victorian residential and small business customers will get a smart meter regardless of whether their premises is a house, apartment or an office.

You need to provide the meter installation technician with clear and safe access to your meter.  You also need to ensure that the meter enclosure and wiring is safe. If you have concerns about your wiring, you should engage a registered electrical contractor to inspect the wiring prior to your meter exchange.

Do I need to be home when the smart meter is installed?

In normal circumstances, you do not have to be home when the smart meter is installed at your property. In the rare case that our smart meter installation technician needs to access the switchboard inside your premises, we will request access or schedule another visit for a time that is convenient to you.

Can I book an appointment for installation?

In most instances we are unable to schedule appointments.  If you are a commercial customer or have special requirements (such as life support or your meter is inside your premises), please contact CitiPower on 1300 783 860 or Powercor on 1300 783 882 to make special arrangements. We do not offer after hours or weekend installations for residential customers.

Do I have to pay the installer for my new smart meter?

No. You do not pay the meter installation technician for the smart meter to be installed.

Can I get the new smart meter put in a different location to the current meter?

Your new meter will be installed in the same location as your previous meter. If you’d like it installed in a different location, contact a registered electrical contractor who will advise you of the costs involved to relocate your meter.

What happens if I am issued with a defect notice during the smart meter installation?

A defect notice is issued when a wiring safety issue is identified. The defect may be identified before or during the smart meter installation or during the testing that we must do before reconnecting the electricity supply. If you are given a defect notice, you will need a registered electrical contractor to rectify the defect and issue a Certificate of Electrical Safety.
