Thursday 14 November
The renowned summer event has progressed from a couple of mates on a dare to the largest ocean water swim in the world – and now Powercor is adding the energy to take the 1.2 kilometre swim to the next level.
And there are celebrations all round – with the 40 year milestone looming fast in 2020 for the swim, as Powercor gets set to notch a wonderful 100 years of service next year.
Powercor Head of Health, Safety and Environment Steve Bourke: “This will be my third time swimming in this iconic event and having Powercor support it will make it even more special. We want to support communities to be happy, healthy and safe and the Pier to Pub is one way we are doing this.”
“We are rapt, this is an iconic event and just like surf lifesavers at Lorne and along the Surfcoast, our lineys along the Bellarine Peninsula are always there to support the community.”
Lorne SLSC President Paul McMaster is confident the new long-term 5 year partnership will keep the event going from strength to strength “We are super excited to have Powercor on board, they are doing fantastic things in the community, working hard especially in those regional areas, and we are appreciative and excited to have Powercor involved for the next 5 years”
There will again be 5000 swimmers who compete next year, and two past champions in Sam Sheppard (7x winner) and Naantali Marshall (6 x winner) agreed that the partnership was terrific for the event:
Sam: “How good for this huge event to inspire the next generation of swimmers to take the mantle and its terrific for Lorne Surf Life Saving Club to have someone like Powercor come on board and its just going to have a great relationship moving forward, and it gets them at the forefront of a terrific regional event and gets them out in the public eye”
Naantali: “I’ve got a 10 year old now and we can’t wait for her to be swimming in 2 years time, and while it is close to my heart having won it 6 times I take it a little easier now – and kudos to the club, I have a house at Anglesea and am a member there and it is great to see Powercor putting back into the wider Great Ocean Road community.”
