We’re replacing existing meters with new improved meters.

Meters play an important role in how we make sure your power is safe and reliable. They provide essential data about your electricity usage for your bills and how our network is performing.

Many of our meters were installed about 15 years ago, which means it’s time for us to start planning their replacement.

Meter technology has significantly improved since then, and newer options provide greater benefits to our customers and the network.

Before we roll out this new technology, we’re running a trial to help us choose the best product for our customers.

Our trial will run for about 12 months and customers who take part in the trial, will have two extra meters installed by a qualified technician for the trail period.

The trial will help us understand how the new meters perform on our network before a wider roll out in 2027.

About the meters

The new meters are like current meters, but improvements in technology mean data can be captured and communicated faster, more efficiently and reliably.

Some of the benefits we’re expecting:

  • Real‑time energy use displayed on your phone (via an app) or home energy system. Currently the information that you get through myEnergy is delayed.
  • Better integration with customers home energy management systems for home solar, batteries and EV chargers. This will allow customers to shift energy usage to optimal times, lowering their bills. It also helps us better manage electricity across the network.
  • Faster detection and improved accuracy of faults in the home (e.g. wiring issues) and on the network (e.g. fallen vegetation or wiring) leading to improved home and network safety.
